Tips for Succeeding in College


While these suggestions are not meant to be all-encompassing, they do serve as some helpful guidelines for succeeding in college.


  1. Attend ALL classes.
  2. Sit in the center of the first three rows of the classroom - so you can see and hear better and the professor will recognize you.
  3. Introduce yourself to the professor and meet with them as often as possible during their office hours.
  4. Attend all review and supplemental instruction sessions.
  5. Read assignments BEFORE you go to class - you will have a better understanding of the lecture material.
  6. Stay awake and take good notes during class.
  7. Review your textbooks and notes after each class and fill in any missing information.
  8. Review your notes frequently.
  9. Seek tutoring and additional help before you need them.
  10. Utilize time available on weekends for studying.
  11. Manage your time effectively - use a day planner to help achieve this goal.
  12. Treat school like a full time job - focus on academics 8 - 4 every day.
  13. Get at least 7 hours of sleep each night.
  14. Eat 3 well-balanced meals each day.
  15. See the department advisor in your major on a regular basis.
