Miguel Armando Garcia was born in Valles, San Luis Pogosi, Mexico, and at age six, moved to Sealy, Texas to begin a new adventure with his parents and brothers..preparation for college.
Miguel does not have childhood recollections of becoming an Aggie, nor does he come from an Aggie family legacy. He has, however, had a mentor along the way. Miguel's brother, an enlisted U.S. Marine, was the one who convinced Miguel not to join the military straight out of high school. Instead, his brother recommended him to research Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs. Miguel's brother pointed him specifically in the direction of Texas A&M, and before long, Miguel was enrolled as a freshmen in the Corps!
Miguel is not your average college student. Miguel will graduate in two and a half years in December of 2005 with a double major in Political Science and Spanish. Directly following graduation, he will remain in the Corps, and has set a goal to earn his graduate degree from Texas A&M by Final Review in the spring of 2007. In addition, it is worthy of noting that Miguel earned his U.S. citizenship just this summer! He said that it was important to him to have the right to vote and make a difference in other capacities he would not have been able to without obtaining his citizenship.
Miguel contributes much of his success at Texas A&M to his family and Corps experience.
When asked what advice he would offer incoming freshmen in the Corps, it came as no surprise.
"Stick it through. Anything worth having comes with sacrifice. Have an open mind to learning
new things and experiences, and remember that it is an honor to wear the uniform and represent
the tradition from which this university was founded," Miguel said.
